What is the Grand Challenges Scholars Program?
The Grand Challenges Scholars Program is a global movement focused on addressing 14 Grand Challenges that face the world today. We’re excited to bring such exciting challenges to Tulane, where our students are already thinking creatively about how to tackle these and other global issues.
I’m passionate about one of the challenges/themes but I’m worried that I don’t have time to do this program in addition to my research (job, classes, service etc.). Should I apply?
Yes! You should absolutely still apply!
The Grand Challenges Scholars Program is designed to be flexible and incorporate a lot of activities you’re already involved in. The GCSP will allow you to take your involvement in these activities and focus your efforts toward a common challenge. Successful GC Scholars are students who are passionate about one (or more) of the challenges or themes and excited to change the world. While the time commitment is made to be flexible and accommodating, it should still be a priority, and we do meet approximately twice a month. We would be happy to further discuss the time commitment and address concerns. Take the time to talk with your faculty mentor about the program and then apply!
Can I be a Grand Challenges Scholar if I’m not in the School of Science and Engineering?
Absolutely! The Grand Challenges cross all disciplines and applications are open to anyone who can complete the requirements.
Is there a minimum GPA requirement for the GCSP?
There is no minimum GPA requirement to be a GC Scholar.
Although the application form includes questions about the student’s GPA, these values will be considered along with the other accomplishments and potential achievements of the student, as well as their demonstrated interest in the Grand Challenges.
How many students are accepted to the GCSP each semester?
There is no maximum cohort size. Acceptance is limited based on the number of qualified candidates who apply.
What sort of programming/events do I have access to as a Grand Challenges Scholar?
GCSP programming will include but is not limited to:
- Global Grand Challenges Summit
- Networking with Tulane faculty, alumni, and the SSE Board of Advisors
- Career advising
- Research symposia
- Social events with GCSP cohort
- Seminars and workshops surrounding the Grand Challenges
- Field trips and tours
Is there funding available for Scholars’ research/projects?
Tulane has many sources of funding available for undergraduate research and projects including but not limited to Newcomb-Tulane College, Newcomb Institute, Taylor Center, CELT, and Center for Public Service.
Additionally, funding is available (by application) at the National level for GC Scholars to attend the National and Global Grand Challenges Summits.
